The main reason I rate The Last of Part II on PS4 with 5 stars is how technically flawless it was. The sound quality was exceptional, the graphics were mythical, and the gameplay was improved by completely changing the outdated battle system and shooting mechanics from the first game. Additionally, Naughty Dog made an effort to address one of the biggest negatives for many players, which was the short duration of the game. Therefore, the studio had very few things to improve upon.
In my opinion, the Remaster is disappointing and feels more like a port than an actual improvement. It is by no means as bad or broken as the garbage Rockstar has been releasing in recent years (see the "remastered" GTA Trilogy and Red Dead Redemption), but at the same time, it is not a significant upgrade. The improvement in terms of graphics and FPS is barely noticeable, and the biggest disappointment is the absence of the online component that was supposed to be included in the PS4 version almost 4 years ago! Ultimately, not only did the online mode not come for PS4 or PS5, but it is now officially confirmed that it will never happen as Naughty Dog abandoned the project.
The only additions to the remaster are a mode that allows you to play the guitar. Personally, I don't know how good or bad it is, so I can't judge. There is also a rogue-like mode (no return mode) where you play autonomous encounters with levels from the entire game, using one of the characters (Jessie, Dina, Ellie, etc.), and as you progress, you unlock the others. Each time, the placement of clickers/humans, etc. will be different, which keeps it somewhat interesting. If you survive, you move on to the next level, and after 5-6 levels, you have a boss battle. Overall, it is quite entertaining, but it seems like it was built based on the online component, and when the studio abandoned the project, they turned it into this.
Unfortunately, in terms of the story, nothing changed in my opinion. The game remained with the choices it made back then, and the absence of any DLC, like the Left Behind for the first game, left me with a bitterness about the path the story took. Of course, even so, I still consider it a must-play experience for everyone, and each person can draw their own conclusions in the end.
If you already own the game for PS4, then Sony will allow you access to the remaster for a cost of €10, which I believe is value for money. If you were waiting for the PS5 version to experience the "ultimate experience," I'm sorry, but the improvements are almost imperceptible.
