Shoulder sling indications
- Conservative treatment in:
- Shoulder dislocation
- Rotator cuff tendinitis
- Shoulder girdle injuries
- Postoperative use
Children's shoulder injuries
The most common injuries during childhood are due to injuries during organized exercise or play. Fractures in children differ significantly from those in adults due to anatomical bone differences, mainly structural.
Children's bones have:
- Very strong periosteum (membrane that encloses the bone)
- Presence of cartilaginous ossification centers in the bones
- Many cartilaginous islands at the ends of the bones from which they develop and which are called epiphyses
Shoulder dislocation in children
It is extremely rare in children under 10 years old, even in high-energy injuries. The shoulder usually does not dislocate but the humeral bone breaks at the point where the epiphysis (cartilaginous island) is located. Immediate treatment is the placement of a sling on the upper limb and an ice pack on the painful area. Transport to the hospital for orthopedic assessment, X-ray. Usually, it needs to remain in a simple sling for 4 weeks.
Symptoms
- Occurs after a severe, or not so severe, shoulder injury with:
- Acute pain
- Inability to move the upper limb
- Numbness, weakness, tingling from the neck to the fingers
- Shoulder deformity, with muscle spasm
- Swelling and/or bruising
The young population has -from birth- greater joint and ligament laxity, which combined with the hyperactivity of modern children and their high-level sports activities, increases the likelihood of sprains and dislocations.
