For two years, Isaacson followed Musk everywhere. The result?
An unexpectedly intimate story about the most fascinating and controversial innovator of our time, who by breaking rules has led the world into the era of electric vehicles, private space exploration, and artificial intelligence. Oh, and along the way, he bought Twitter.
Walter Isaacson, author of biographies of Jennifer Doudna (The Code Breaker, Kleidarithmos editions), Leonardo da Vinci, Steve Jobs, Albert Einstein, and other great personalities, returns with a revealing story full of amazing narratives of triumphs and storms, posing the question: Are Musk's demons, his driving force, what leads to innovation and progress?
When Elon Musk was still a child in South Africa, he was often beaten up by bullies. One day they started kicking him relentlessly in the head. He stayed in the hospital for a week. However, the physical scars were insignificant compared to the emotional ones caused by his father, a cunning, charismatic visionary engineer. When Elon returned home, his father scolded him. "I stood for an hour while he yelled at me and called me stupid and useless," Elon recalls.
His father would decisively shape his psyche. Elon evolved into a tough but vulnerable man-child with an extremely high tolerance for risk, a thirst for drama, an epic sense of mission, and a manic intensity that was ruthless and sometimes destructive.
In early 2022 – a year after SpaceX launched thirty-one rockets, Tesla sold a million cars, and he became the richest person on earth – Musk spoke sadly about his compulsion to create drama. "I need to change my mindset, not always be in crisis mode, which has been happening for fourteen years or, rather, all my life," he said. It was a caustic comment, not a sincere goal. Even as he made the promise, he was secretly buying shares of Twitter, the ultimate playground of the world. Over the years, whenever he felt desperate, he remembered the time he was bullied on the playground. Now he had the chance to buy the playground.
For two years, Walter Isaacson had become Musk's shadow, attending his meetings, accompanying him to his factories, and spending hours interviewing him, his family, friends, colleagues, and rivals. The result is a revealing personal story, told from the inside, full of incredible incidents of triumphs and storms that attempts to answer the question: are the demons in Musk's mind what is needed to drive innovation and progress?
The official biography of Elon Musk will be released simultaneously worldwide on September 12, 2023.

Perhaps the best gift you can give to an anxious mind!
My friend gave it to me as a gift and the first thing I noticed is its large size! The book is about 750 pages, quite heavy, but the author has broken Musk's life into small chronological pieces and it is very easy to read. Having read his previous book, this one delves much deeper and is definitely more up to date. By far much better than the previous one.
-I'm about halfway through, I will come back once I finish it, I just thought these comments would help those who are interested in getting it, as it has just been released.
