About 5 cm of water is enough for it to work. It attaches to the bottom of the aquarium with suction cups and throws the water upwards. The only disadvantage is that because it throws the water upwards, it is like a small fountain. This causes a lot of splashing and if the aquarium is low, it may leak outside.
