"What, then, is time? If no one asks me, I know what it is. But if I wish to explain it to someone, I do not know what to say." This classic passage from Saint Augustine precedes the commentary he proposes on the three times that our grammar isolates as present, past, and future. Even when we invoke the past that no longer exists or the future that does not yet exist, we speak during the present of speaking. Hence the apt distinction presented by Saint Augustine in the present of the past, the present of the future, and the present of the present. This book proposes a writing of this temporal knot, designed by Augustine with the tools bequeathed to us by Lacan, to delineate the structure that constitutes the way the speaking being exists in the world. At the center of this knot is placed this famous present of the present, an unthinkable object at the heart of speech. This book enters into dialogue with the time that quantum physics relativizes as well as with the subjective time that philosophy attempts to define. It focuses on the experience of speech that is a psychoanalysis and which is arranged in a way that stands in the present of free association. From this point arises the idea to confront time as an object unique to each person, which defines their mode of being, their way of alienating or separating from the Other, which animates them in haste, which creates the effectiveness of their action, and which gives the coordinates of the hour of their desire.
