Description

The introduction of DDR5 memory brings a massive performance boost for any server or workstation utilizing this technology. The clock speed starts with a 50% increase compared to the previous generation DDR4 memory and already shows additional speed increases over 6400 MT/s. The infrastructure has also been improved to offer additional boosts to the overall system performance. Each application will react differently to these changes, but for any application using a high number of CPU cores and already limited by the scheduled bandwidth in a DDR4 system, the performance improvement will be impressive.

The system memory will determine the overall performance. Generally, the more memory available in the system, the higher the overall performance that can be expected. System memory installations or upgrades are extremely easy with the socket used on the motherboard. No special skills or tools are required to complete the task.

Servers supporting virtualization applications heavily depend on the amount of memory installed. Many virtualized servers can coexist on the same physical server, provided the total amount of installed memory can meet the needs of each individual virtualized server. When a server or workstation runs an application that exceeds the server's memory, it is forced to move parts of the application to online storage systems such as an SSD. When the application needs to move parts from outside and bring other parts from the SSD, the latency can increase significantly.

Ensuring that the system has enough memory to hold the entire database or application can significantly reduce the overall application latency, sometimes by orders of magnitude. Micron Server and Workstation DRAM modules undergo an extensive series of tests at both the component and module levels before being released to partners and customers. Enterprise and cloud customers can be confident that these modules leave the factory only after meeting the strict JEDEC specifications set for enterprise-level systems.
