This G lens for E-mount cameras provides perfect still images and videos with versatile 6x auto zoom. The maximum aperture is consistently F4, from a wide-angle lens of 18mm to a medium telephoto lens of 105mm, with high resolution and contrast throughout the range. The lever and ring on the lens body allow for free adjustment of the zoom speed, with a secure and steady grip.
A lens for various shooting needs
If you need to change lenses during shoots, it can cause delays and unwanted changes in image quality. Whether you're shooting photos or videos, the 18-105mm zoom range (full-frame equivalent = 27-157.5mm) and the quality of this excellent G lens will suffice for most shooting conditions, while you will have the added advantage of smooth automatic zoom.
Excellent performance at any focal length
The advanced optical design incorporating two ED (extra-low dispersion) glass elements and three aspherical elements delivers the coveted G lens image quality throughout the zoom range. Exceptional clarity and contrast are maintained across the entire image area, offering natural, realistic rendering that accurately captures even the most subtle visual nuances.
Professional Level Zoom Technology
Sony Handycam® technology has been applied to the SELP18105G lens to ensure smooth, quiet zooming that is ideal for movie creation. The focus benefits from the same type of professional-level technology, providing smooth, quiet operation with great responsiveness. The lens length remains constant during zooming or focusing. Zoom reversal is available after a software update.
Constantly Variable Zoom Speed Control
Thanks to the lever located on the lens body or the zoom ring, you can zoom with confidence and stability and control the zoom speed with absolute precision. This advantage can prove particularly important when shooting movies.
Constant maximum aperture F4
With a constant F4 aperture at a focal length of 18–105 mm, you can zoom and change framing without worrying about exposure settings. Even at maximum telephoto zoom, you can usually shoot without needing to boost ISO sensitivity and potentially increase noise.
Beautiful Bokeh of G Lenses
G lenses are renowned for their beautifully smooth background defocusing (bokeh). This is partly due to the 7-blade circular aperture design that enhances smoothness and produces natural highlights. Smooth background defocusing can really make the subject of focus stand out in photos with almost three-dimensional depth.
Sharpness and clarity in all conditions
The built-in Optical SteadyShot image stabilization compensates for camera shake that causes blur in handheld shots. Capture sharp and clear night scenes or shoot indoors in low light without increasing the ISO sensitivity, risking increased noise.

Very good for its price. The positives are that if it is placed on a gimbal, its length does not change and therefore there is no issue with balancing. Another positive is the zoom, which is very smooth with the button on the side. In general, it is a must-have for video, especially for wedding and baptism videos where you need something stable, with a fixed focal length, and enough flexibility in terms of zoom. In terms of photography, I wouldn't say it's the best, but that depends on what each person is shooting. Overall, if you want video, it is a must and should be in your camera bag.
A diamond lens. Where to begin. From construction, incredible sharpness, amazing from the zoom button on the sides.... the Stabilization is one of the best I have seen in a lens...
I have been working with him for 3 years with the Sony A6500 kit for fantastic video, silent, fast focus, and of course a button that zooms smoothly without touching the lens rings. It is top for video and stability. In photography, you get a decent result for a kit lens.
I mainly use it for videos with the a6400. The lens's optical stabilization balances satisfactorily the lack of stabilizer in the a6400. Its variable focal range covers almost all needs and its sharpness is good throughout the range. The autofocus is incredible, focusing very quickly. The quality of its materials is also good, and the relative smoothness of the zoom and focus rings does not cause any issues. Basically, I prefer it this way. The lens's best feature, which impresses and greatly helps in changing the frame, is the silent power zoom in videos, allowing you to zoom in at the speed you desire. In short, the best all-around APS-C lens for the a6XXX series considering its cost. If its aperture were 2.8, it would cost twice as much. Even today, when I have switched to full frame, I enjoy working with it when using the a6400!
I won't say much!! The lens is simply worth its money. I loved it from the first moment! I use it on the 6300 and I am completely satisfied with the video. I haven't tried it yet for photography, but some clicks I took are very good.
The range 18-105mm is ideal for covering 95% of photographic needs (practically only telephoto is left out). With a fixed aperture of f/4, satisfactory speeds are achieved throughout the range. The impressive optical stabilization compensates for the absence of a larger aperture (e.g. f/2.8). Even at 105mm and in low light, I was able to take a clear photo handheld. I believe that the stabilizer gains at least 2-3 stops. However, the stabilizer proved even more important in video. In Full HD/4K videos, I previously had a strong problem with my prime lens because even the slightest shake became noticeable on the screen due to high resolution and frame rate. Finally, the video looks flawless and the zoom/focus is completely silent, even in complete isolation conditions. The colors are very vibrant and the sharpness is good. Regarding a previous negative evaluation of sharpness and distortion, I would like to comment that a zoom lens cannot be compared to a prime lens (e.g. 19mm or 30mm, etc.). There are certainly zoom lenses that combine low distortion, top sharpness, and are faster. However, if anyone knows such a lens that doesn't cost at least three times as much, please post it so I can buy it too. As for distortion, Lightroom automatically recognizes the lens and applies the appropriate correction profile with very good results. The most important advantage of the lens, however, is its weight and size. For its category, it is excellent and pairs very well with the small body of modern mirrorless cameras. This is something that you will see in practice has great value in grip and hand stability.
On the negative side, the focus and zoom rings have a very smooth feel, which is something I would prefer to be different (i.e. have a faster and "strict" response). Similarly, in power zoom, I would prefer a wider range of zoom in/out speeds, as I found it quite "conservative". These two factors limit creativity in video a bit. Finally, the autofocus speed is average and will not fully exploit the speed of your camera (if you have an a6000 or above). However, this did not bother me much until now.
Conclusion: for me, it is the best value for money E-mount general-purpose lens available today. I don't give it 5 stars because the enemy of the good is the best.
