Description
This translation of the Holy Bible is a labor of love for the word of God and the result of long-term collective work with a deep sense of responsibility. It is not intended for liturgical use, but aims to assist the modern reader, especially the youth, for whom understanding the Hebrew text or the translation of the Septuagint and the original New Testament is impossible or difficult, to approach, as reliably as possible, and experience the ever-relevant and living Word of God. The translation of the sacred text of the Old Testament is the fruit of a painstaking and long-term effort, approximately thirty years, whose foundations were laid by the late professor of the Old Testament at the University of Athens and Director of the Apostolic Ministry, Vasileios Vellas. He had prepared the translation of twenty-two books from the Hebrew text into Katharevousa, the official language of the Greek state at the time, and made it available in 1968 to the Bible Society. To continue the work, a translation team was formed consisting of university professors I. Oikonomou (program coordinator), N. Olympiou, N. Papadopoulos, P. Simotas, V. Tsakonas, who worked to complete the translation. Nevertheless, the establishment of the demotic language, which intervened, as well as the priority given by the Bible Society to the publication of the New Testament translation in demotic (1985/89), did not allow the Old Testament to be published earlier. However, the need for a faithful to the sacred text and understandable to the modern reader rendering of the Old Testament was urgent, and thus the Bible Society assigned the final phase of the translation to professors of the Theological Schools of Athens and Thessaloniki, V. Tsakonas and M. Konstantinou. The style of the texts was mainly edited by philologist-writer Kaiti Chiotelli. The rendering into the modern Greek language for the 39 books of the Old Testament, whose original is written in Hebrew, was made from the critical edition of the Hebrew text Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia, while for the books whose original is in Greek, their rendering was made from the also critical edition of the text of the Septuagint (LXX) A. Rahlfs, 'Septuaginta'. The choice to translate the Hebrew text of the Old Testament was made for scientific reasons and, more importantly, to serve as the basis for the future translation of the Septuagint text, which the Hellenic Bible Society has also planned. This Bible contains both the Old and New Testaments, has quite thin pages (although it also depends on getting used to it) and small letters (I wouldn't recommend it for the elderly), it is written in the Greek we speak today and does not have the ancient text on the left, I would recommend it to anyone looking to buy a Bible.
Translated from Greek ·Did you find this review helpful?This specific edition contains 49 books of the Old Testament according to the Orthodox Church along with the 10 deuterocanonical books and the entire New Testament as we know it. The font may be difficult for the elderly, but personally, I have vision problems and had no issue. It includes colored maps of Palestine during the Old and New Testament periods along with the cities mentioned in the books and two more at the end of the book with the journeys of the Apostle Paul and the Middle East in the Old Testament. It has a glossary that explains many words and names in detail for their significance and additional information (chronological tables, Jewish calendar, measures, weights, and currencies of the time).
It is suitable for people who have never read the Bible before and want to start; each page contains references at the bottom to parallel passages with similar meanings and footnotes from the authors.
The only downside due to its size is that the pages are very thin and crumple easily.

It is readable, but I would not recommend it for the elderly. The paper is very thin, in order to keep the volume small. Essentially, the page "folds" very easily. Next, when so many pages need to fit. If someone buys it knowing the above characteristics, it is a good purchase. It also has a color map of Palestine and the Mediterranean and a brief commentary by the editors Theologians.
