Description
In the Chronicle of Lemnos, the long history of a relatively unknown and somewhat neglected island of the Aegean until recently is transformed into a fascinating narrative, a true chronicle of the place and its people. In its pages, readers will find important information about the society, economy, political life, art, and intellectual creation of the island over time, from the first nomadic settlements during the late Paleolithic period (circa 10,500 BC) to the present day: with extensive references to the prehistoric cities of Poliochni and Myrina, the significant Koukonesi, Hephaistia, and the Kabeirion during the Archaic and Classical periods (7th-4th centuries BC), Lemnos of the Hellenistic and Roman times, Lemnos as a Byzantine, Venetian, and Ottoman possession, as well as the adventures of the island and its inhabitants from the liberation of 1912-13 onwards. Finally, Lemnos of today is highlighted: places of historical significance, archaeological sites and museums, as well as locations of natural beauty, geological monuments and sites of ecological interest, beaches and traditional settlements. There are also references to the intangible and gastronomic heritage of the island, as well as the musical and dance tradition that is revived to this day.
