Pycnogenol is a patented extract from pine bark. There are many generic pine bark extract products on the market that are much cheaper than pycnogenol, which has its own patented extraction method from specific pine trees (French). I don't know how much it differs from the others and if it justifies its high price. However, the active substance is the same, oligomeric proanthocyanidins, a type of flavonoid, which is also found in grape seed extract, which is widely produced and cheaper. I also don't know if it has the same effect as pycnogenol.
The supposed benefits are numerous, including anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, like many other substances in this profile (curcumin, quercetin, etc.), clarity, and assistance with symptoms of ADHD, asthma, and joint pain.
I mainly sought it as an antioxidant for the nervous system and brain, seeing that it is one of the substances that can cross the blood-brain barrier, namely the proanthocyanidins. There aren't many substances that can do that. Generally, our brain doesn't have the same antioxidant defenses as the rest of our body.
From my limited use, I can say that I noticed increased clarity, deeper breathing, and that overall sense of well-being that flavonoids generally provide. I imagine that with regular use, these benefits accumulate. However, I did feel a slight warmth in my joints. As I can see, it boosts the immune system, so those with autoimmune conditions should avoid it as it may intensify symptoms.
I will come back after some time when I try it again. I didn't experience that warmth in my joints again. I use it occasionally in the evening in combination with other supplements, 4-5 times a week, depending on the results. It is best to take it on an empty stomach. I use the same 60mg product. I still need to see if generic pine bark extracts have the same benefits because the price is excessive.
