The windproof cap is made of stainless steel. It helps to redirect air upwards when moving horizontally and allows descending or ascending currents to be released from either the top or bottom of the cap accordingly.

Inside, above the chimney opening, there is an inverted cone with insulation inside, so that the exiting flue gases strike the cone and are directed outward without condensing. It also prevents water from entering during heavy rainfall.
