Description

In the first two "books" of his main work, Schopenhauer presented his epistemology with the first view of the world as representation and his metaphysics with the first view of the world as will, thus laying the foundations for the corresponding second views, with which he now presents on the one hand his aesthetic theory and on the other hand his teachings on human life in general (pessimism, theory of law, ethics, and soteriology). With these, the systematic part of his philosophy is essentially completed. The "books" included in this 2nd volume are those that established the great reputation of the work, left an indelible mark on the spirit and work of many creators, and made Schopenhauer's actual philosophy known to a wider audience. The sometimes obscure analyses of the first two books are now followed by equally profound, yet more accessible reflections on art in general and the individual arts, on the quality and meaning of human life, on freedom and justice, on ethics, and on redemption from the sufferings and pain of existence. With this volume, the publication of the four main chapters ("books") of the first and systematic part of The World as Will and Representation is completed. From this part, only the Appendix with the extensive critique of Kantian teaching remains, which will be published shortly in a separate volume, the third and last of part A. Subsequently, the publication of part B of the work is also planned, also in 3 volumes. Thus, this famous work, which so deeply influenced philosophical thought, art, and science of the 19th and 20th centuries, will be available to the Greek reader for the first time in its complete form, as well as with all the necessary elements (introduction, comments, epilogue, indexes, bibliography) for its essential understanding.
