After the destruction of Smyrna, thousands of refugees flood the port of Piraeus, while the military movement that officially takes power demands the removal of the king. The military-controlled administration must ensure the feeding and housing of the grief-stricken refugees who, beyond their hardships, have to endure the almost hostile treatment from the native Greeks in many cases. They hope that they will soon return to their places of origin, but the reality is very different.
