I had the WH1000XM3 for many years, which I was really satisfied with. However, I needed the upgrade and I don't regret it. Improved sound quality and definitely lighter! The only downside is that the packaging no longer includes the plug adapter for airplanes, but okay, one can buy it separately.
I am closing in on about a week since I got them and I have to say the following:
Since I understand that the usage each person makes plays a big role, I should mention that the review is for using the headphones in an indoor space - office (quite quiet) and not so much outdoors. Mainly for calls due to work and very light gaming.
Positives:
• Excellent microphone. I have received compliments on how clear my voice sounds when I use them, and most people think I have some special microphone and that the result does not come from the headphones - which was the selling point in my opinion that influenced me a lot in the purchase. I don't think at this price you will find headphones with such a good (perhaps even professional one would say) microphone.
• Incredible ANC. Although, as I mentioned, they are not intended for outdoor use from my side, and even though it is a feature that personally is not so necessary for me and I have it almost always turned off, I must admit that from the tests I obviously did, it simply does not exist. I don't have much experience with ANC, but I gave it to others to try, and their jaws dropped as soon as I activated it. Truly, everything they say about this feature I believe is true. As soon as you activate it, all noises disappear to an excessive degree, which may make it dangerous in outdoor spaces. So, be very careful.
• Very good Bluetooth. I wear them and I can get up from the desk and continue my call anywhere in the space, changing rooms without the slightest interference. The signal seems to be very strong, and we move around without losing call quality or general connectivity with the computer.
• The battery is very decent. I am never stressed that the battery will leave me. They charge very quickly and with heavy use, they can last me about 3 days, while with light use, I trust that they will last about a week.
• In general, the features are very good, such as when someone talks to you, the sound lowers, when you are on a call, sidetone activates (something that is very necessary for me), etc.
Negatives:
• Although at first, every time I wear them they are very comfortable, after hours of use they start to make me feel a bit uncomfortable. I have noticed that after about ~3 hours of use, they start to hurt the top of my head and more so my ears. Generally, I have big ears but not to an extreme degree, more medium to large, and such pain they cause I believe is excessive for my dimensions. I am looking to change the ear pads to see if this problem can be fixed, but generally, the longer you wear them, the more uncomfortable they become, so I don't know if they are suitable for many hours of continuous use.
• The app is mediocre at best. I downloaded the app on iOS and OK, it does its job, but the UI is a bit outdated, and it took me a little time to find where each function is and generally to search a bit. I needed to do one update so far (although I remind you I haven't had them for long), and it took quite a while to complete, but if it doesn't happen often, it's not a big issue.
• The sound quality covers the needs for calls and relaxation like listening to music or light gaming, but in no way is it good enough to cover demanding sound for more intense gaming, and generally, the bass is almost non-existent. OK, this specific issue is not a serious problem for me, since it is something I don't need, but I try to provide as comprehensive a review as I can for those who might need something like this. And to be honest, at such a price, such bass is a bit unacceptable when the JBL speaker I bought for 100 euros has a significantly richer and livelier sound. And just so you don't say that I'm comparing dissimilar things (headphones with a speaker), the Razer headphones I had when I was younger, which I bought for one-third of the price (100 euros), had a much livelier and more intense sound.
• The simultaneous pairing function of two devices they offer is useless. At least for me, I had them connected to both my phone (iOS) and my computer (macOS) at the same time, and it constantly created issues, especially when I received calls. Perhaps this is due to the fact that calls were coming in on both the phone and the computer because of the Apple ecosystem, but the result was that I couldn't answer the calls until I turned them off and turned them back on, which was very annoying. I fixed this by sacrificing connectivity with the phone, so now I can only have them connected to the computer, which makes the simultaneous connectivity function useless for me, and at the same time, I can't use the app since I don't connect them to the phone.
• Finally, for some reason I still don't understand, when I use them and open a game to play (especially in League Of Legends), as soon as the game starts, the sound becomes very choppy and screwed up. All the voices and sounds become "thicker and heavier" (as if everything has slowed down), which is very strange, and for now, I can only fix it by turning them off, turning them on, and reconnecting them. Quite annoying.
Overall, I am fairly satisfied with my purchase; for the purpose I bought them for, they do their job perfectly and are cheaper than competitors of the same level (Bose, AirPods Max, etc.). But let's not forget that they cost 300 euros (at least that's how much I paid), and 300 euros is still quite a lot. I do not justify the small issues and quirks they have at such a price, even if they are not deal breakers. I would only recommend them to anyone who needs incredible ANC and an excessively good microphone.
I will return to the review if anything changes.
These headphones are really amazing. They are far better than other headphones/earbuds I have tried, the noise cancelation is really really amazing at suppressing white noise airplane sounds bus engine sounds etc. The quality of the speakers is really good as well far better than the AirPods Max in my opinion. they are pretty lightweight and I don't have a problem with the thin cushioning unlike many people say. Personally I would recommend them to anyone that has the money to spare for some good headphones but if you don't have the economical prosperity for 300€ headphones there are other great choices put there
I will start with the positives. The sound quality is very good and the music sounds really nice. It blocks external noises when listening to music. You can control the volume with the touch feature it has.
Unfortunately, for calls through Teams or generally using them with a computer, they are not suitable at all. The sound passes through to the surroundings, so people around you can hear more of them than you. Much cheaper headphones have much better noise cancellation. Although it has the option to activate noise cancellation and hear-through technology through the app, the appropriate settings cannot be found to prevent others from hearing you.
Conclusion:
Very good if you want to listen to music or if you are alone in a room, but not at all good for work.
I comment only for those who have high demands on the sound they hear! I was looking to buy the best headphones on the market for training! After choosing the most expensive and those with the most positive reviews, I ended up with these! I have to say the following: Initially, fortunately, I found them on sale for 265 euros because they really are not worth even that much! They do not have volume and when you turn them up the bass disappears! Really disappointing when JBL headphones for 130 euros have more volume, the same external noise isolation, and better bass! I wonder about those who have given 5 stars and are thrilled with these headphones!
There is a reason why it is top. For work, etc., the microphone obviously doesn't work if you work in an office/cafe.
I wish I could choose the ANC level. I also wish they worked better in Zoom calls... Otherwise, excellent!
I used the XM3 from the same Sony series for many years, and after they started to break, I decided to upgrade. My immediate observations are as follows:
- The sound is no longer as bass-heavy. Even if you can adjust it through the equalizer, the headphones now have more mid-range/drum-heavy sound and the bass is noticeably lower but at a good level (I compared them side by side with my friend's XM4). Otherwise, the sound quality is very good and much better than the AirPods MAX, which for some reason every reviewer out there is obsessed with.
- Although I hesitated to get the XM5 because they don't fold for easy transportation, personally it doesn't seem to be such a big deal for me. But it will definitely be a deal breaker for others.
- BIG FLAW, the removal of NFC. Unfortunately, I didn't realize this while purchasing (considering that XM2 to XM4 had this feature). NFC was very useful, especially when you have multiple Bluetooth devices, as it gave great priority to quickly connect with the headphones. Although, truth be told, the Bluetooth connection is much faster now compared to the 3 and 4. NFC was a very useful feature. It's a shame it was removed.
- Active Noise Cancelling. I didn't believe ANC would improve, but it truly has an incredible difference. Now, I don't even know if it's safe anymore; it cancels everything when you walk on the street, voices that were once a weak point for the XM3 are nothing now, even loud ones (years ahead of the old models and AirPods MAX). Surely, the additional microphones play a role in this, and with that, we move on to the next point...
- The microphones have greatly improved call quality. Unfortunately, with the older models, calls were a significant issue as many times the microphones "preferred" surrounding voices over mine when I was in a crowded place. Well, these headphones solve that problem.
- Lastly, build quality, and this is why I gave it 4 stars. For some reason, Sony decided to go with (God bless them) "vegan" materials for construction. The ear cushions are terrible, very uncomfortable, and don't withstand time. I highly recommend to anyone who has or is considering getting these headphones to buy cushions from WICKED CUSHIONS, which are made of genuine leather and are much more comfortable and plush. Personally, since I use the headphones at the gym as well, I also purchased sweat covers to prevent moisture from entering the sound drive (I had issues with the XM3 in the past). Unfortunately, the headstrap cannot be changed, otherwise, I would replace it too since it's also made of "vegan" leather...
ALL IN ALL, the headphones are excellent and worthy successors to the old ones. I hope they bring back NFC and genuine leather in the next models, and they will be perfect.

The charging cable is ridiculously short. If you don't have one, I recommend buying a separate UGREEN cable
I have had them for a month and what has impressed me is that they are user-friendly and lightweight!!

a) Dolby Atmos and Sony 360 Reality Audio on Tidal,
b) Dolby Atmos on Apple Music with iPhone and iPad,
c) Dolby Atmos and multichannel audio on Netflix with iPhone and iPad,
d) Dolby Atmos on Apple TV+ with iPhone and iPad,
e) High Res Audio with cable connected to High Res dac from Tidal and Apple Music streaming with iPhone and iPad.
for all these, these are the best headphones out there...the features of Sony are above the competition!!

These are top-notch headphones with great capabilities!!... The top-notch ANC and Sony's application for iOS and Androids take it to the next level!! I connected it with a cable to a Hi Res dac and listened to Hi Res content and I truly "couldn't believe my ears".

Extremely good headphones!!..with stunning ANC (I also have the AirPods Pro 2 and I can tell) and especially musically!! There is no reason to say anything more....they have written it before me, here, in the reviews. I got the Midnight Blue and they are wonderful!!! Update: I also wonder about the most recent review with 1 star...the rest of us 50 are deaf and one has "golden ears"...I listen to them with iPhone 15 Pro Max and today it warned me that I am listening "too much loud" at 102 db in the Health app....are there better ones?...yes...I would give 725 euros for the Focal Bathys which however have inferior ANC than the XM5 (and definitely not the AirPod Max even though I am a fan of Apple..Sennheiser..Bose etc), otherwise..."to each his own.."
After 10 months of use:
Excellent in ANC and battery life. I use them continuously for 4-5 hours for calls and music, and they work without charging and drop to 70%-50%. I recommend proper battery charging (I never let it drop below 20% to charge them as the manufacturer suggests).
The build quality could be more sturdy for their price. The previous model was better in this regard. One negative is that when you connect them for charging, you can't use them simultaneously and they turn off on their own.
After almost a month of use, my experience so far:
Positives

1) Excellent build quality.
2) Noise cancelling out of this world! 3 years of using the previous model, WH-1000XM4, and I couldn't imagine that the company could improve the level of sound isolation even more. And yet, at least 2 levels higher on the new model manage to achieve complete isolation from the environment (inside the house, on a busy street).
3) Immediate, seamless and uninterrupted connectivity with iPhone 12 pro max and a decade-old laptop, one at a time. The issue I had with the previous model, where it would randomly lose connection with the laptop and sometimes become completely unusable, is no longer there. Stable connection through closed doors and intermediate walls in a 72 square meter house. Truly impressive.
4) Wonderful music experience in different genres (progressive rock, blues, classical music, solo piano).
5) Crystal clear microphones in online meetings, phone calls, excellent sound isolation again. Tested outdoors only on the balcony.
6) Fortunately, they improved the connectivity and low battery notifications and got rid of the tragic sounds with the ridiculous pronunciation. Brevity is the soul of wit.
Negatives

1) Terrible battery life. Not only does it not reach 30 hours, my feeling is that it's worse than the previous model.
2) Charging cable is completely useless, as it is desperately short, for use only from a USB next to the laptop. What the serious f@ck, Sony?
3) Supposedly, the cushion for greater comfort and prolonged use was further improved. Bollocks. My feeling is that they probably made it thinner and, compared to the previous model, I can't stand it on my head for long. I can barely get through an episode of a series or an online meeting. I see no improvement in comfort. Absolutely. And it's not because I don't have a headrest, the previous model sits on the same head...
4) The ear cups are smaller compared to the 4's. Incomprehensible why. I imagine to enhance isolation. Fine. And in this way they sacrifice the user experience. If you have big ears, my condolences.
5) Strange bug: the battery indicator on the laptop is at 50%. That's how it showed from the first connection, and that's how it continues until today. The headphones have updated firmware and the laptop is Windows 11 pro. Go figure.
I have had them for about a year now... Mixed feelings, unfortunately I have not had the perfect experience with them as other users describe. After 3 months of daily use at home, they started giving me problems:
• Initially, the mechanism that stops the music when you remove the headphones stopped working. It has not worked again to this day.
• Then, around the 6th month, the double tap of the right earbud that pauses videos started having issues. Now it only works whenever it wants to.
• After about 10 months, the sound isolation from the right earbud started having problems. It creates a loud buzz, as if you are inside a ship, whenever there is some noise outside (e.g. a car passing by) - a buzz that was not there before.
• In recent days, the right earbud has started to crackle whenever playing music - the more bass, the more crackling.
The symptoms of buzzing and crackling decrease when I turn off the sound isolation (they are noticeable again, but not as bothersome)... but sound isolation is one of the main reasons I bought them, so you see the problem.
Otherwise, when they decide to play properly once in a while, the sound quality is excellent.
Unfortunately, the negatives are too much for me, as I just want to listen to some music without having a constant "BUZZZZZ CRACKLE" in my right ear. There is no way I will buy them again, nor will I recommend them to anyone. I will wait for Sony to release the next model (IF I continue with Sony), and either send these for repair, or throw them away.
After a day of using them:
●amazing sound
●incredible sound isolation (and for those who are wondering, it works even without playing music, complete silence!)
●very lightweight and comfortable
●long battery life
The sound from these headphones is magical. It is incredible to be in a noisy environment like a crowded office or the subway, to "see" the noise around you but only hear your music.
The sound quality is top-notch, especially if you adjust the equalizer to your taste and the genre of music.
The connection with my mobile (Samsung) and computer is seamless.
For several weeks, I had set them aside and relied on the WF-1000XM5 (the earbuds in the series), and now that I have reintegrated them into my daily life, they continue to impress me.
Very good headphones, they are worth their money, among the best ANC headphones that exist, AMAZING BATTERY, I highly recommend them
For me, these headphones have the following problems:
1. They do not have enough volume in the sound.
2. The quality changes when you connect them to a TV and they sound like 5-euro headphones.
3. They are too expensive for what they offer.
4. The noise cancellation that everyone praises is mediocre. For example, when I wear them and use a vacuum cleaner, I can still hear the vacuum cleaner normally
The headphones are very good - I use them daily for many hours due to work. They are comfortable (personally, they hurt a little on the head after many hours, but it's okay), they have very good sound (external noise cancellation), amazing battery life, and very good microphone noise reduction.
Personally, I also have the Bose QuietComfort Earbuds II, which are the best I have ever used - they have better noise cancellation than these, but they lag behind in battery life and microphone noise reduction.
Overall, they are very good, beautiful, and well-crafted.
There are no words. Excellent headphones. Although I hadn't used quality over-ear headphones to have a point of comparison, I can say that they are worth every last euro. The only negative thing is that I expected greater volume, but due to the noise cancellation, there is no need. I would definitely buy them again!
These are by far the best headphones I have ever worn. Apart from the fantastic sound they offer, they also have incredible features, and in combination with the Sony | Headphones Connect app, you can find even more things about the headphones.
Explaining in detail my experience with these headphones:
- Incredible comfort, they do not tire after long hours of use. They have a very nice and comfortable padding that does not bother the head or tire the ears, nor does it cause any pain compared to other headphones. They have cushions on the part that rests on the head and around the headphones, which help provide this amazing comfort.
- Amazing sound. It always adjusts based on the user's specific applications (Spotify, Tidal, Sony | Headphones Connect), depending on how the listener wants to hear their music, whether with more bass or less. In general use or simply listening to YouTube, the bass is very good and the sound is exceptional.
• It should be noted, however, that the WH1000 XM4 may be able to play slightly louder than the XM5 and their bass may be slightly deeper. However, the XM5 does not lag behind. The sound is equally high-quality.
- Noise isolation. Searching on various sites, I saw that they are considered the "best" over-ear headphones in terms of noise isolation. And indeed, wearing them and testing them, I saw that the noise isolation is incredible! It literally isolates everything, offering a tremendous experience.
- Excellent battery life! As many other users have mentioned, they last for many days with a lot of usage time, which is very convenient!
- Additional features: they have touch controls on the right side. For example, swiping up increases the volume, swiping right changes the song. When you place your hand on the right headphone, it automatically switches to ambient mode and stops the noise-canceling mode, and as soon as you remove your hand from there, it returns to normal. When you take off the headphones, the music pauses, and when you put them back on, it continues normally. It analyzes the environment in which someone is and adjusts the sounds accordingly, whether you are walking, running, or sitting in a room, the headphones read the environment and adjust the sounds, providing an even better experience for the listener.
- They have a "speak to chat" function, where when you speak and have selected the headphones to be in Noise Canceling mode, they switch to Ambient mode, and when you stop speaking, they return to NC. So, you don't need to constantly press buttons to change modes.
- You can use them with noise assistance (Alexa, Google) without needing any buttons.
In general, these headphones have so many incredible features that it may take you hours to explore them all and see what they can do by either visiting the Sony website or using the Sony | Headphones Connect app. Personally, I was won over by the sound, the bass, the noise isolation, their comfort, their build quality, and especially the noise features, touch features, and how they work automatically without needing to search for pause buttons, voice controls, etc.
Whatever I say about these headphones is not enough. They are by far the best headphones I have ever had!
• The only negative thing I have to add is that fingerprints are visible, sometimes when the head sweats and leaves some oils, there are generally marks on the padding (especially if the headphones are black), but this can be solved with a cloth.
• And maybe I would have liked it more if the sound went even louder. Although this is not good for the ears, sometimes I'm in the mood for the music to be played at maximum volume. However, the sound is not lacking or weak. It's just that for my personal taste, sometimes I would like any headset I have to go even louder.
Everything is fine, the only problem is the delay in connecting to a Mac computer, specifically in Teams. It makes daily work difficult if you have many calls. Now I use headphones for this job.
I have had them in my possession for a few months.
POSITIVES
+ Great for use in the office where there is a lot of noise from the floor above and the isolation is really impressive. I couldn't work without them. The best NC on the market.
+ The most impressive thing is how well the person you're talking to can hear you in an outdoor environment with a lot of noise. Obviously, the many microphones do a good job of isolating the voice from the other sounds.
+ Lightweight on the head.
+ Strong battery. Several times I connect them with the cable and turn off Bluetooth and NC if there is no noise in the room. Usually lasts 12 days with 3 hours of use per day.
+ Powerful sound with several settings from the app.
+ Very useful touch that stops the music to hear external sound.
+ Also very useful is that the music stops for a few seconds if you speak so that you can hear what the other person will answer. (can be turned off)
NEGATIVES
- Quite warm on the head, especially during the winter months. Difficult to use in hot weather. (like most over-ear headphones)
- They do not fold. They are not so big, however, they fit easily in a laptop bag with their case.
- Expensive.
- Fingerprints are visible.
After 5 months of daily use, I can share my opinion. The sound is simply amazing.
POSITIVES
- The sound quality is very good and can be adjusted through the app.
- They fit very well on the head and don't cause any discomfort, even after prolonged use (5-6 hours continuously). They are the only headphones that don't bother me when I wear glasses (although I should note that I've never had over-ear headphones, only on-ear).
- The ANC is one of the best I've tried and is especially enjoyable when traveling. And if you're already in a quiet place, it "closes" even more and you get lost in the calm and your music. Also very important for me, when you have the ANC on and you're not listening to music, you don't hear any light white noise (as happens with AirPods Pro 2).
- The battery lasts about 28 hours from what I've observed, but they charge 100% in half an hour, and in 3 minutes they charge 10% (which is about 3 hours of use).
- The case they come in is simple and good, you don't need anything else.
- Much nicer design compared to the XM4.
NEGATIVES
- They don't fold, so they take up more space in your bag (something the XM4 does).
- The microphone, for some reason, when I talk outside, it automatically goes into ambient mode, resulting in the other person being able to hear the noise. (I haven't figured out if it needs a separate setting through the app, but I haven't looked into it much because it hasn't caused me a big problem.)
If you're looking for headphones like these and have a budget of €300, get them with your eyes closed.
I bought them to use on the metro and have my peace of mind.. when you wear them and activate the cancellation, you are transferred to another world, noise-free.. incredibly acoustic. Lightweight without tiring you, endless battery life, expensive indeed, there is no doubt about it, but I'm not crying over my money.. very good sound quality.. I watched Netflix through my phone and I thought I was at the cinema. In conclusion, if they were a little bit cheaper, they would be PERFECT.
I've had them for over a month now, using them for many hours every day. I bought them solely for the ANC and to find some peace and quiet.
They are exclusively used in my home (noisy apartment building) and 99% for movies and TV shows, so I won't comment on the sound fidelity/quality (sorry, but if I want to listen to music with fidelity/quality, I use Kali Audio LP6 V2 monitors or Sennheiser HD 600 headphones).
Both the physical isolation (due to the ear cups) and the ANC are simply worth the money, along with the endless battery life, the fact that I can wear them for hours without getting tired, and the insane Bluetooth range (I can walk around my entire house without losing connection or quality).
They can connect to two devices simultaneously (mobile and Win PC), and the microphone is very satisfying for indoor conversations, which I've tested several times.
I've never had over-ear headphones with ANC before, so I can't compare them to previous Sony models or others, and the price of €330 initially shocked me, but for me, the ANC and the peace it offers are worth it and then some.
Much better design compared to previous ones. Very good battery life - they turn off by themselves when removed from the head. Very good sound quality. Generally worth the money!
So, I've been the owner of these headphones for about a month now. Before, I had the XM4s.
The noise canceling may have been slightly better on the previous ones, as well as the volume.
Otherwise, they are an impeccable investment for headphones that you can have with you all the time, with incredible battery life, and they even turn off on their own when you forget about them. They have a better fit than the XM4s and don't tire out your head as much.
Very sturdy construction for my standards (I've gone through PHILLIPS, JBL, Marshall to end up with SONY) and I believe they are truly a worthwhile choice.
