Description
In contrast to the majority of modern and postmodern readings of Oedipus Rex, Euphemia Karakantza focuses on the question of identity. This shift arises from the simple assumption that the greatest disability in Oedipus's life is that he does not know who he is; patricide and incest stem from this ignorance. Surveying a wide range of postmodern critical theories, Euphemia Karakantza 'follows' the protagonist's steps in the networks of conversations created by Sophocles in this tragedy in search of his identity: with Tiresias, Jocasta, the Corinthian messenger, and Laius's servant. Here, Oedipus's political (=within the city) identity is redefined in a long, painful, and complex process, which creates the new narrative of his life. Euphemia D. Karakantza is an Associate Professor of Ancient Greek Philology at the University of Patras. She is also a Fellow at the Center for Hellenic Studies at Harvard University. Her interests focus on post-feminist and political readings of Homeric poetry and Attic drama, as well as on the reception of Greek antiquity in modern and postmodern critical thought, the performing arts, and literature.
