Description

The story of Vourla, a huge public brothel in Drapetsona, licensed by the municipality of Piraeus in 1875 on a plot of land owned by the family of Minister Panagiotis Pipinelis, which operated for six decades under the protection of the state and the supervision of the police. It was enclosed by a high wall, had wings with uniform cells, and resembled a prison. Indeed, during the Occupation, it was turned into a prison and ended its career as a prison in 1970 when it was demolished.

Vourla was the bottom of the hierarchy of paid love. There gathered the prostitutes who had neither a name nor a future and only went out with a special permit. Not even their voices, of course, came out of the walls of Vourla. Almost 80 years have passed since the brothel-barracks closed. These women have not lived for years. The book is a tribute to the women of Vourla, whose anguish was to leave something behind to remind people of their tormented existence.

«I will never grow old. A gypsy woman told me that someone will kill me. So much the better!»
