The devil's claw, Harpagophytum procumbens, belongs to the family of Pedaliaceae. It is a creeping herbaceous, perennial plant with a sturdy central root. Its leaves are irregular and gray-green, while its flowers have a trumpet shape with red, purple, and pink colors. The fruits are woody, oval, and contain black and brown seeds.
It typically thrives in lowland areas and sand dunes, and is associated with the dry sandy landscape of the Kalahari Desert. The traditional use of the plant has been known by the locals of South Africa to European conquerors. Studies have shown that the use of the plant for 8-12 weeks can reduce pain and improve physical function in people with osteoarthritis.
The main substance of the plant responsible for its effectiveness is harpagoside and beta-sitosterol. The value of devil's claw in treating arthritis, rheumatism, and musculoskeletal pain is globally recognized. Additionally, devil's claw has anti-inflammatory properties due to the iridoid glycosides it contains.
The dried root of the plant is used in tea, capsules, and tablets. For brewing an infusion, we boil a teaspoon of dried root pieces in one and a half cups of water for 15 minutes and strain. The daily dosage should not exceed 2-2.6 grams.
Precautions: It is not recommended for diabetics to take it without medical guidance, nor for individuals with regulated blood pressure treatment or stomach ulcers. The herb may promote the secretion of acid in the stomach, which can cause problems in individuals with peptic ulcers or gastritis.
