Klonoa is an underrated series of 2.5D platformer games with two main titles for PS1 and PS2. These two games are included in this remastered package.
You control Klonoa, a strange bunny/cat (no one knows for sure what it is) in a world of dreams.
In the first game, Door to Phantomile, you live in the world of Phantomile, where you have a dream about a ship crashing into your village, which becomes a reality. With your friend Huepaw, you go to see what is happening and discover that two mysterious entities have kidnapped Diva, who with her song can revive the world. Now, you are on a quest to find a mysterious pendant.
In the second game, Lunatea's Veil, Klonoa wakes up in the world of Lunatea, where he helps Lolo, an apprentice priestess, to ring four bells and save the world from a mysterious fifth bell that will bring chaos.
Both stories are as cute as can be, resembling a children's fairy tale. The characters speak in a gibberish language and have simple personalities. However, both games have excellent unexpected twists as you progress towards the end, as well as moments that will make you tear up.The gameplay is equally fantastic. Klonoa has a ring that, when it contains a magical entity like Huepaw, can grab and inflate enemies, allowing you to throw them or bounce on them as platforms. The game is easy at the beginning and challenging at the end, with the challenges and puzzles in the final stages being insanely difficult. The controls are equally responsive, and you will know that when you fail, it's your own fault.
These games were and still are the only ones that make the most out of the 2.5D gameplay (2D gameplay in 3D graphics) better than any other 2.5D game on the market, even today. The area where this remaster falls short is in the graphics, mainly due to their source.
The first game is based on the Wii remake, which replaced the character sprites with polygonal graphics and FMVs with in-game cutscenes. This version brings back all the minor changes made for the Wii to make everything look like it was on the PS1, except for the aforementioned changes. When the game had sprites, you could forgive the poor animation in the cutscenes, and the opening and ending of the game are clearly much worse now with in-game graphics. The character models are equally poor, as they were based on the pre-rendered sprites of the PS1.
The second game had cell-shaded graphics on the PS2, which were removed here. Without them, the models that were supposed to resemble cartoons simply look poor.
Both remasters, excluding the issues with their source, were made with passion, improving the resolution, textures, and colors to make the quality between them look like they were released on the same day. You have to keep in mind that you are playing games that are 20 years old. Both games are two underrated gems. If you are a fan of Kirby, you will feel right at home, as these games are much more skillfully made.
