Basic voltage regulator for TO-220 packaging. Essential for basic 5V electronics. This regulator has a linear drop of ~2V.

This means you need to provide at least 7V for a clean 5V output. There is a constant "quiescent" current draw of 6 mA. This regulator can supply up to 1.5A as long as it has proper heat sinking. The higher the input voltage and output current, the more heat it will generate. Without additional heatsinking, you can burn up to 2W.
