Description

What it offers

  • Balancing the intestinal flora
  • Maintaining good bowel function

Why it was made

Bacillus coagulans, also known as Lactobacillus sporogenes, and Bacillus subtilis are two spore-forming probiotic bacteria. According to the official definition by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), probiotics are "live microorganisms which, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host." More specifically, probiotics, when taken orally, must be resistant to the conditions of the gastrointestinal system, allowing them to reach, colonize the intestinal epithelium, and multiply, promoting health through a series of beneficial effects, such as regulating and maintaining the normal intestinal microflora, stabilizing the function of the gastrointestinal barrier, inhibiting the growth of pathogens, and having immunoregulatory action.

Probiotics are safe, effective, and administered either as a preventive measure or as a therapeutic agent. The use of spore-forming probiotic bacteria, particularly those of the Bacillus genus, as dietary supplements is now widespread. This is because they are more resistant to the conditions of the upper digestive system. Additionally, they produce antimicrobial compounds (bacteriocins), which prevent the entry and colonization of competitive microorganisms and pathogens, as well as enzymes that enhance digestion and nutrient absorption.

Strains of B. coagulans and B. subtilis have been characterized as "safe" for consumption by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA). B. coagulans has been found to be effective against acute diarrhea and abdominal discomfort, as well as in the symptomatology of patients suffering from irritable bowel syndrome, while also contributing to the management of depressive disorder.

B. subtilis contributes to the maintenance and improvement of intestinal microflora and overall gut health, while also enhancing the systemic immune response in elderly individuals.
