The Nike Air Huarache was released in 1991. Shoe designer Tinker Hatfield wanted to combine the fit of neoprene water-skiing shoes with the functionality of South American sandals. The shoe, which was an instant success, soon appeared on basketball courts and then on the streets, where it established itself as an iconic model.
