I really wonder about the 5-star ratings from other buyers. Obviously, either they have no idea what sound quality means or they have no comparison to other portable speakers on the market.
Having said that, I don't believe it is a "bad" portable speaker, but the price definitely does not reflect its sound performance. On the other hand, the appearance is very good, so it depends on whether someone wants an accessory that plays music or a speaker with an emphasis on sound quality.
The problem is one and only: bass. Frequencies below 100Hz are literally non-existent and at 100-200Hz they are greatly reduced.
Out of the box with the default sound settings (EQ), the lack of bass is immediately apparent. And as the volume increases beyond 75%, the sound balance completely deteriorates.
Things are somewhat improved when adjusting the EQ through the application to maximize the bass. But even then, its quality is not good, definitely not something one would expect from a €170 speaker.
In comparison to the UE Wonderboom that I had previously - which was also smaller in size - the overall sound quality of the Explore is undoubtedly better. And the Explore is 2.5 times more expensive with today's prices.
Also, I should mention at this point that I am not a fan of excessive bass. For example, the JBL Charge 5 has exactly the opposite problem for me, an excessive emphasis on low frequencies.
In any case, on the positive side:
- It is very beautiful and has a good (small) size.
- The mids are very good and the highs are quite good.
- The application is very user-friendly.
- The battery seems to last around 15 hours at 60-65% volume. Of course, the "Up to 27 hours at typical listening volumes" claim is not true, unless 'typical listening volumes' means 30-40%, which is not so typical in my opinion. Nevertheless, it is at the level of competition.
- Good build quality.
Conclusion: If you want a speaker that does its job and is beautiful and "easy," money no object, feel free to buy it.
If you are looking for good, powerful sound with value for money, this is definitely not what you are looking for
