No app is needed. You can connect (with "wifi direct") and find the IP with nmap -sn. Then it has a pretty good web UI to:
1. connect to another bitch tier wifi (i.e., a VLAN without internet)
2. turn off wifi direct and BLE
3 stars because you need to have knowledge to do the above, but the printer is quite good for its size.
We have had it at work for 2.5 years. The positives are that it is fast. Now for the negatives, it has countless connectivity issues with the wifi (this HP application is the worst there is), the genuine toners are extremely expensive, around €50 and it lasts for 1000 pages. We have managed with compatible toners that cost between €6-12 BUT to use them you have to surgically remove the chip from a genuine toner without breaking it and put it in the compatible one, otherwise it doesn't recognize the toner and won't print. When you pay for a brand, it should offer you something, otherwise why shouldn't I just get a no-name?
For home, it is just what you need due to its size and wireless printing. It is also beautiful. Have you ever wondered if you really need a color printer? Color laser printers have expensive consumables, color inkjet printers clog if they are not used for a long time. Black and white laser printers will still work even if they sit for, let's say, 2 years, and you only need to buy one toner. If you plan on printing photos, then yes, go for color obviously. If it is for quick prints or text prints, the color printer may be unnecessary.
However, pay attention to something: HP models that end in "e" require continuous connection to HP (internet) in order to print (even if you have connected it via USB). The ones without "e" work normally and offline.
I bought it after much thought, reading the reviews, but I proceeded with the purchase because it was going into a children's room where space was limited. Easy installation, wireless printing, the only drawback so far after about 6 months of use is that sometimes it is not recognized by the laptop or mobile and I need to restart the modem-router and then everything is okay. Finally, with the purchase, I received a 6-month instant ink gift and the toner came from hp for free after 2 months (depending on the prints). The purchase was made through a well-known store because I had a gift voucher from another purchase, so it cost me €50 less, at €139 for the purchase.
As the other reviews say, do not buy this printer, it's a waste of money. HP is trying to force us to have an account and constant connection in order to only buy ink from them, which they charge more for than insulin?
Very difficult installation. Constant disconnections and sending of reports afterwards. It requires a lot of effort with phone assistance from HP support to get it back up and running, and then it crashes and starts over shortly after.
Update 9/19/2023: I threw it from the first floor into the garden and finally found peace. I regret not doing it earlier.
REQUIRES internet connection and references to HP.
REQUIRES a registered email account.
REQUIRES you to agree to only use genuine ink.
REQUIRES the internet connection to always be active.
The HP website either doesn't recognize the printer or throws an access denied error just because.
I've been struggling for 1.5 hours and I don't even know if it will work in the end.
STAY AWAY because soon they will ask us for our TAXISNET code
