"The Battle of Sarantaporo was one of the battles that History will speak of," wrote Leonidas Paraskevopoulos, the chief artillery officer of the Army of Thessaly, to his wife in 1912. Indeed, Greece began its military campaign in the early 20th century with "iron" momentum and an irresistible aggressive spirit. The campaigns of 1912-13 were the culmination of the aspirations and efforts of an entire century. Undoubtedly, the final outcome of the military struggles of the decade 1912-1922 did not satisfy the Greeks. The centenary of the Asia Minor Catastrophe is an opportunity for reflection and a new "visit" to these significant events. As Aristocles Aigidis, a publicist of Asia Minor origin, aptly noted in 1934, 1922 marked the end of a (intermittent) "hundred years' war" between Greeks and Turks, which began in 1821. However, viewed within a broader historical context, the magnitude of the Asia Minor Catastrophe is mitigated. This is because Greece, in a very short period, made a huge qualitative leap, and from a depreciated power (1897) it temporarily became a considerable geopolitical factor in the Near East (1920). The analysis of the developments of this war-torn decade is mainly based on the comments of the Times of London and the Revue des Deux Mondes (the French review of arts, letters, and international politics, which was highly esteemed and influential at that time in Europe and America). The memoirs and analyses of leading Greek officers (Victor Dousmanis, Leonidas Paraskevopoulos, Ioannis Metaxas, Prince Andrew, Cleanthes Boulalas, etc.) also constitute a primary source for the study at hand.
