Description

In 1860, Theodoros Falez Kolokotronis, grandson of his namesake, the Commander-in-Chief of the Greek Revolution, in his book "Priests of Eleusis" and specifically in the section where he dedicates his work to Nikolaos Skoufas and Athanasios Tsakalov, notes: "Blessed be the Masonic Lodges, which baptized you in the font of Freedom." Since then, hundreds of studies have been written, sometimes attempting to reinforce and other times to undermine the role of Freemasonry in the life of modern and contemporary Hellenism.

This study attempts to distance itself from biased views, categorical opinions, and dogmatic positions and to critically approach the existing literature. Its aim is to shed a little more light on a largely unexplored aspect of Greek history and to highlight the need to study the Masonic phenomenon under exclusively scientific terms.

From Constantinople and Smyrna to the Ionian Islands and Ambelakia of Thessaly, this book aspires to unravel the thread of events from the beginning and, by re-examining the sources, to narrate the journey of one of the most important brotherhoods in Greek history.
