Description
The Bismarck, the flagship of the German Navy, was the largest German warship alongside the Tirpitz. It had a displacement of 50,900 t and a crew of 2,092.
It was commissioned on August 24, 1940, and set sail for Operation Rheinübung on May 18, 1941. Together with the Prinz Eugen, it was discovered early by British aerial reconnaissance.
When it encountered the Hood, it was sunk by the Bismarck on May 24, 1941. After a long pursuit, it was hit by an aircraft torpedo on May 26, 1941, and was attacked by the British battleships King George V and H.M.S.
On 27/05 its crew scuttled the Bismarck 490 km from the French coast.
