Description

The Turkey of 2013 does not resemble in many ways the Turkey of the 2002 crisis. Stavros Lygeros leads the reader into the labyrinth of the undeclared war between neo-Ottomans and Kemalists, which had everything: electoral battles, political intrigues, referendums, collusion of the "deep state" with organized crime, conspiracies, provocations, assassinations, coup attempts, American "finger", conflicting judicial prosecutions, religious brotherhoods, money barons, and fierce conflicts for control of the media.

This undeclared war is interconnected with the 30-year real war against Kurdish rebels. The struggle of the PKK irreversibly separated Kurdish identity from Turkish identity. When Ocalan was arrested in 1999, the Turks believed they had won. Today, Erdogan negotiates with him for a political solution.

Stavros Lygeros sheds light on the geopolitical rearrangements in the Eastern Mediterranean, which have also been fueled by the discovery of energy sources: the imperial syndrome of energy-thirsty Turkey, the "Arab Spring", Israeli politics, the transformation of the Republic of Cyprus into a debt colony, and the impending re-serving of the Annan Plan. In this context, he analyzes the issue of the EEZ and the network of Greek-Turkish relations, reconstructing dominant myths ("awakening of the beast" and "Erdogan is good, the generals are bad").

The map of the Turkish economy is composed by Kostas Melas. Based on primary statistics, he decodes its sizes, dynamics, and contradictions. What has been an advantage so far is also the Achilles' heel of the Turkish model. If capital inflows stop, the bubble will burst.

The book is written in a modular way, so that each of its four units can be read autonomously.
