The scenario takes place four years after the events of MGS 4 Guns of the Patriot, where Raiden has retired from active duty and is a member of the peaceful PMC. During a routine mission, where Raiden is tasked with protecting the prime minister of an African country, he is attacked by a cyborg from a rival PMC, Desperado Enforcement. The cyborg kills the prime minister and mutilates Raiden. Several weeks later, Raiden learns that Desperado is planning a coup in the state of Abkhazia. Equipped with a new cyborg body, Raiden goes to Sukhumi, the capital of the country, to protect Abkhazia from the forces of the ruthless PMC.
