Description

Between the 15th and 13th centuries BC, the Hittite kingdom was one of the most significant in the Near East, as it controlled a large part of Asia Minor and northern Syria. It maintained close diplomatic contacts with all the powerful kingdoms of the time, and in its capital, tens of thousands of tablets were discovered, offering us a wealth of information. Several tablets refer to the kingdom of Ahhiyawa, a significant Mycenaean kingdom in the Aegean. It is now considered certain that this term is etymologically linked to the ethnonym "Achaeans." The Hittite texts present the kingdom of Ahhiyawa as powerful and extroverted. It was often involved in the affairs of western Asia Minor during the 14th-13th centuries BC and maintained a stronghold in Milawanda (=Miletus). During the 13th century, the Hittite rulers recognized the Achaean king as their equal. There is also a reference to a conflict related to Wilusa (=Ilium/Troy). Of particular interest are the exploits of Piyamaradu, a vassal of the Achaean ruler, who created many problems for the Hittites and are described in detail.     The introductory chapter briefly presents the history of the Hittite kingdom during the first half of the 2nd millennium. There is also a brief overview of the history of the Hittite language and script. In the next four chapters, the texts are presented by chronological period with an extensive description of the historical context of the time. It is worth noting that these specific Hittite texts are presented for the first time in Greek.
