Description

Between the 15th and 13th centuries BC, the Hittite kingdom was one of the most important in the Near East, as it controlled a large part of Anatolia and northern Syria.

It maintained close diplomatic relations with all the powerful kingdoms of the time, and in its capital, tens of thousands of tablets have been discovered, providing us with a wealth of information.

Several tablets refer to the kingdom of Ahhiyawa, which is a significant Mycenaean kingdom in the Aegean, and it is believed that this term is etymologically connected to the ethnonym "Achaeans".

The Hittite texts present the kingdom of Ahhiyawa as strong and extroverted. It was often involved in the affairs of western Anatolia during the 14th-13th centuries BC and maintained a stronghold in Milawanda (=Miletus).

During the 13th century, the Hittite lords recognized the Achaean king as their equal. There is also a mention of a dispute related to Wilusa (=Ilium/Troy).

Particular interest lies in the exploits of Piyamaradu, a vassal of the Achaean lord, who created many problems for the Hittites and is described in detail.

The introductory chapter summarizes the history of the Hittite kingdom during the first half of the 2nd millennium. Additionally, there is a brief overview of the history of the Hittite language and script.

In the following four chapters, the texts are presented chronologically with an extensive description of the historical context of the time. It is worth noting that these specific Hittite texts are presented for the first time in Greek.
