Description

Description The economy of modern Greece has a history of two centuries. During these two hundred years, the country managed to move from the margins of southeastern Europe to the core of today's European Union. From a poor rural province of the Ottoman Empire, it has transformed into one of the most developed economies in the wider region of Southeastern Europe, despite the two major economic crises that hit the country in 2010 and 2020. In this book, we review and analyze the history of the economy of modern Greece, from the eve of the struggle for independence to the present day. We focus on the main determinants of its transformations and development, with particular emphasis on the role and interactions of national, social, and economic ideas, institutions, and policies, as well as the impact of international and geopolitical developments. The aim of the book is to interpret developments through the analysis of the deeper factors that determined and continue to determine the course of the Greek state and the Greek economy.
