The boats of the Elves glide silently down the Anduin River, carrying the Fellowship of the Ring southward toward Mordor. Stealth is abandoned as the companions must trust the speed of the water to carry them swiftly between steep cliffs and away from the hunters pursuing them. As they round a bend in the river, all eyes are raised to see a sight few have witnessed, the imposing Argonath: The Pillars of Kings. With their feet seeming to glide upon the water, two great statues rise tall with arms raised in defiance and weapons gripped tightly to their chests. Crowns adorn their grand gray heads, while their marble gazes look north in tireless vigilance. Carved by many hands from living rock, the Argonath are sculpted in the likeness of kings of old, ancestors of Aragorn. For centuries past, they guarded the borders of ancient Gondor, standing immobile against the foes of Númenor - projections of the strength and grandeur of a people that is now nearly vanished.
