Description
Known as the "Father of History," Herodotus was a tireless traveler who meticulously recorded in his Histories the causes that led to the Persian Wars, as well as the people and events involved (kings, generals, battles, naval battles, etc.)
Herodotus laid the foundations of historical research, as for the writing of the Histories he conducted systematic research to gather written sources and oral testimonies, while extensively using autopsy for information gathering.
In this context, Herodotus collected and presented in his Histories a vast wealth of ethnographic details, as well as mythical elements, about almost all the peoples of the then-known world.
The title "Father of History" was attributed to Herodotus by Cicero, and it still follows him today, as his work is at the bedside of every archaeologist, while archaeological research confirms his descriptions, even those that were occasionally deemed imaginative.
Herodotus's Histories, written in the Ionic dialect, were divided by Alexandrian scholars into 9 books, each named after a Muse.
The series, which includes the ancient text, modern Greek translation, and commentary, consists of 4 volumes that encompass all 9 books. Specifically, it includes:
- Volume 1: History A - Clio, History B - Euterpe
- Volume 2: History C - Thalia, History D - Melpomene
- Volume 3: History E - Terpsichore, History F - Erato, History G - Polymnia
- Volume 6: History H - Urania, History I - Calliope
