Description

This edition includes all the Introductions and Prefaces that Hegel wrote for his works, from 1807 to 1832. Known primarily for their iconic aphoristic phrases, the Prefaces are primarily irreplaceable evidence of the way in which the philosopher has conceived the fundamental mission of each of his works.

As for the Introductions, they are integral parts of the works to which they are prefixed: the project of Phenomenology is difficult to understand without its magnificent Introduction; the peculiarity of Hegelian Logic is nowhere clarified as clearly as in the Introduction to the Science of Logic; the need for the establishment of philosophy as a universal science within a system finds a clear formulation in the Introduction to the Encyclopedia; finally, the Philosophy of Right presupposes the connection of the concepts of will, freedom, and law, which is exposed in the Introduction to the work.

This edition presents these texts in a new, reliable translation, aiming to be a fundamental infrastructure work for the reception of Hegelian philosophy in Greece, but also a kind of "natural" introduction to the Hegelian philosophical universe. The extensive interpretive Comments guide the reader in a close reading of the texts, aiming at interpreting their main points, highlighting their logical course, and clarifying the meaning of obscure passages.

  • Hegel was the last thinker and philosopher of the modern era who opened a new path (school) of thought, developing a philosophy based on freedom within a broader philosophical system. He dealt with many topics to which he gave new dimensions (from property to ethics and the state). Idealist and inspired by Christianity, he engaged with logic, nature, humanity, and the Divine through a dialectical scheme, based on which he moved from thesis to antithesis to return to his original thesis, which he had enriched and elevated.

Clearly influenced by the ancient Greek dialectic of Heraclitus, Zeno of Elea, and of course Plato, among others, modern dialectics has been directly linked to Hegelian methodology. Hegel was arguably the most systematic of the post-Kantian idealists, and it is even considered that the so-called German idealism essentially ended with his death. The influence he exerted and the reactions he provoked were enormous, from Karl Marx to Charles Taylor, among others.

In "Hegel: Prefaces and Introductions," the texts (prefaces and introductions to his works) are gathered in which Hegel embodies the essence of what he analyzes as well as the way (methodology) he approaches them.
