Description
A mythical figure in the intellectual and social life of post-war Famagusta was Evangelos Louizos, an aesthete and publisher, who in his youth was associated with the group of Katsimbalis, Karantonis, Elytis, Antoniou, and others, and hosted Elytis and Seferis in his home. A large part of Seferis's love for Cyprus belongs to the "master," as Seferis called Louizos. He engaged in Cypriot studies and founded the publishing house Les Editions L` Oiseau in Famagusta in 1966, at the urging of Seferis. He lived in Famagusta until 1974. He had a great friendship with Niki Marangou, to whom he often said, when she visited him in Nicosia after the invasion: "Write down what I tell you, so you know what you will find when you go back." Thus, when he died in 1993, Niki Marangou's memories of him became a semi-real, semi-imaginary narrative: "But when I started writing, the characters in the book took their own paths, imagination intertwined with the true stories of Famagusta, with my own memories of the era, and eventually a different text emerged, which is no longer the story of Evangelos but the myth of an era and a city. A young German painter marries in Famagusta in 1962 a peculiar man, who is twice her age. Through the story of Stefanos and Vera, the dark paths of love, the character of a coastal Mediterranean city in the 1960s is outlined, blurred and hidden." Niki Marangou studied sociology in Berlin. She worked at the State Theater of Cyprus and from 1980 to 2007 she ran the bookstore and publishing house "Kochlias" in Nicosia. She published books of poetry and prose and children's books. She was an award-winning member of the Hellenic Authors' Society and the Cyprus Writers' Union (state awards, 1998 Cavafy Award, 2006 Academy of Athens) and had held seven solo painting exhibitions. She participated with her works in the Ljubljana Biennial of Graphic Arts in 1993 and the Cairo Biennial in 1996. She lost her life in a car accident in Egypt in February 2013.
