The most metaphysical work of Ibsen. The story of a woman who is called to choose between a peaceful family life and the pursuit of adventure. The Ibsenian triangle here is more distinct than in other works of the great Norwegian playwright. Ellida will find herself in a personal impasse when two men compete for her. She will only give the solution herself when she feels completely free to show her preference. This work, along with "Nora" and "Hedda Gabler," was considered too daring for their time because the heroines claim the right to freely shape their own lives.
