Description

What do we know today about 1821? And what will millennials feel, what will they tell their children about the Revolution?
Stories of many people, our History. Battles in the mountains and seas, battles in words, in the texts of those who lived the Revolution or dealt with it.
A battle in today's square, in front of the statue of Kolokotronis. There, where the words about 1821 of an old homeless man struggle with oblivion and national stereotypes, the interpretations of History, its silences. There, where the battles, through these narratives, come to life before the surprised eyes of a young girl.
Everyone is here. Heroes and anti-heroes. Roumeliotes and Moraites, chieftains, Phanariotes, shipowners, philhellenes, and warlords, the Great Powers, the firmans of the Ottomans, the yataghans of the Albanians, the bayonets of the Egyptians.
The graphic novel "21: The Battle of the Square" attempts a different approach to History, combining the artistic narration of comics with scientific documentation.
Following the texts of over 50 authors, as well as the artistic creations of more than 50 painters and engravers, the book constitutes a puzzle of subjective approaches to the battles and figures of the Struggle, the events, and the ideas of the Revolution. The book's appendix, with a glossary, timeline, biographies, as well as informative texts and references to sources, offers a multi-layered reading.
The research and creation of the graphic novel were supported by the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation and the contribution of the University of the Aegean. The project is under the auspices of the National Historical Museum. (From the presentation on the back cover of the book)

Soloup - known in the world as Antonis Nikolopoulos - attempts to revisit the struggle of the Greek Revolution of 1821 through the eyes of the contemporary viewer, highlighting dark secrets in the archives of History.
The graphic novel "21: The Battle of the Square" covers the years of the Revolution up to the arrival of the Bavarian King Otto. A central episodic story unfolds in modern Athens under the statue of Kolokotronis. Twenty-one chapters, divided into five major sections (Square, Hatzaria, Sergouni, Heroes, Guillotine) in which twenty-one stories based on the narratives and texts of people who lived or studied the Revolution are interspersed, with inset portraits of "heroes" and "anti-heroes."
