Description
The book consists of self-contained narrative texts of historical, mythological, folklore, and viticultural interest, inspired by the long history of the 'wine capital' of the Peloponnese, the region of Nemea. From these texts, it emerges that the area is a historical 'wine field', a field that has continuously produced renowned wine from antiquity and the Byzantine era to the present, regardless of whether Franks, Ottomans, or Venetians occupied the place in the middle ages. In the Homeric epics, we find the area under the name Araithyrea and the description erateini (charming); in historical times, it bears the name Phliasia and produces the renowned Phliasian wine from the Phliasian vine; in the middle ages, it takes the name Agios Georgios, at which point the Phliasian vine is renamed to Agiorgitiko grape, a name under which it is still cultivated today in the wine fields of Nemea, as the area has been officially called since 1923. Thanks to the quality wine potential of the Agiorgitiko variety, the soil and climate conditions of the area, and its cultural heritage, the toponym Nemea was recognized in 1971 as a 'Designation of Origin' for red dry wines produced from the indigenous grape variety Agiorgitiko, adapted for centuries in the wine fields of 17 communities that constitute the wine production zone 'Protected Designation of Origin' NEMEA. In the green landscape of modern Nemea, the nine columns of the once splendid Temple of Nemean Zeus of Ancient Nemea stand out, in whose honor the Nemean Games, one of the four Panhellenic athletic games, were held. Archaeological site (Sacred grove, Stadium, Museum) and modern wine fields, the two pillars of historical and economic support of the area, in whose state-of-the-art wineries one of the noblest products of our agricultural economy is produced.
