The calyx of hibiscus contains nutrients such as antioxidants, vitamins, and inorganic salts. The herb is rich in anthocyanins, flavonoids, gossypetin, hibiscetin, and sambubetin, as well as daphniphylline, myricetin, chrysanthemin, and delphinidin. The dried fleshy petals contain water-soluble red pigment, organic acids (malic, citric, tartaric), and hibiscus acid.

Extract from hibiscus flowers may have beneficial effects on heart health, similar to those of red wine and tea. It has been found to contain antioxidants that help regulate cholesterol levels. Hibiscus (Hibiscus sabdariffa L), grown in China, India, and Taiwan, is traditionally used to address high blood pressure.
