The Lunar Module was a two-part spacecraft used to transport a two-person crew from lunar orbit to the surface of the moon and back. During ascent, the landing stage served as a launch base for the ascent stage, and it also housed the landing equipment, engines, and fuel required for landing. Six such spacecraft successfully landed on the Moon between 1969 and 1972.
