Description

A brief chronicle of a significant moment in the Greek Revolution and European history: nine days before and two days after the Exodus of Missolonghi through the eyes of a teenager, Markos, the Gelektzis who was violently pushed into adulthood during those days of April 1826. "Based on the testimonies of fighters (mainly Kasomoulis and Spyromilios), we follow the flow of events that lead to the escalation of hunger, loss, suffering, heroism, true innocence, and simultaneously the mythical savagery experienced by the heroes and heroines of the Exodus. All the characters except Markos and Angelos are historical, and many dialogues are conveyed verbatim, as recorded. Even the storyteller, Lias, is a real person. As for the Gelektzides, the teenagers who almost all lost their lives for freedom, they are, to me, the bravest of the brave. They resemble epic heroes of magical fairy tales who move straight ahead on roads with no return. They never lose heart, never surrender, never commit suicide. In a world that is transforming but human suffering continues to reign, let us keep them in our memory. As long as we remember them, they remain alive, and we become more authentic, more generous, more courageous, that is, 'full of life'." L. L.
