Description

"Before breaking the glass that we now accuse, I first broke the right one,
then a week later the left one and then 15 days later both of them together."
OUTSTANDING PHYSIOGNOMY among the writers of the Interwar period, the "dadaist" Giorgos Zarkos. The man who in the 1930s carried out unprecedented actions for the time, repeatedly breaking the windows of the publishing house "Pyrssos", whose owners had published his work under a different name and not his own.

In addition, Zarkos symbolically broke many more "windows" with his views, texts, and actions, such as those of academia, power, justice, persecuting authorities, political parties, politicians, the press, the Church, prisons, and of course, the psychiatric institution.

His rebellious and disobedient attitude led to his confinement, for political reasons, in the psychiatric institution. This book deals with these reasons, as well as the conditions of his confinement, based on evidence found in the Athens Public Psychiatric Hospital, the author's written texts, and the press of the time.

As for Zarkos and his story, he probably claims many "firsts" and uniqueness. Firstly, he represents the most characteristic case of confinement in a psychiatric institution for political reasons in Greece, according to the presented data. As a result, he became the first person to write and publish books about the serious problems of the psychiatric system and its food. His candid writing and dark humor broke the silence, indifference, and "windows" of the psychiatric institution, questioning the conventional references to the "asylum" and the "mad". He is certainly the only one from the Left who, at that time, dealt extensively with the subject, expressing opinions and proposals. A Left that, unlike other European countries, for unexplored reasons, did not concern itself with mentally marginalized individuals.
