Description

"Referee Barlasina blows the final whistle and from that moment on, nothing is the same. One would think that the earth splits in two and the Long Walls of antiquity emerge, which defined Athens from its port, Piraeus." (From the book's prologue)

June 1, 1930, Panathinaikos-Olympiacos 8-2. For some, it is a legendary victory. For others, a humiliating defeat. For some, it is the game that "birthed" fanaticism and animosity. However, readers of the book "We Scored Eight" will understand that it is much more than that. Through the publication of unpublished documents, author Andreas Oikonomou places us in Athens in 1930 and explains why what the average fan of both teams experiences today is, to some extent, the impact of that match!

The slogan "farewell Tzanasis," the inaugural radio broadcasts, the forgotten anthem of '30, the songs of Vasilis Avlonitis, the police sirens, the casket of the Piraeus residents, the blockade of Syngrou Avenue, the ninth goal that was disallowed, the siege of Piraeus and the occupation of Thessaloniki, the first football "fake news," the radio broadcasts about the cup, and the bedbugs in Olympiacos' beds, are just some of the topics that unfold in the pages of the book. Each reference in the work is documented with relevant sources: from newspapers and magazines of the time to federation and association documents.

Among the dozens of personalities interacting in the pages of the book, two are dominant: the coach-founder of the "8-2" Joseph Kiunsler and the mythical football player Angelos Messaris. The author traces the steps of the former, following him to the stadiums of Hungary (while he was still a player), and reveals the reasons that led him to coaching and to Panathinaikos. As for Messaris... Among the hundreds of photographs and documents in the book, the material from the personal archive of the "blond Angelos" stands out!
