Description

“One day I will write my autobiography. I would like to write it myself, so that I can better illuminate the events. So many lies have been told about me...” Thanks to this book, which includes letters from the great soprano, as well as her two attempts to write her memoirs (in 1957 and 1977), Maria Callas's wish finally comes true. From her difficult childhood in New York to the years of war and Occupation in Athens, from her timid first steps in the world of opera to worldwide recognition, scandals, and personal trials, from her idealized love for her husband to her passionate affair with Onassis, this edition gives us the opportunity to discover the reality behind the myth for the first time. Sometimes Maria, a sensitive and fragile woman, unfolds before us, and other times the legend Callas, often a victim of her great name, in constant anxiety about the condition of her voice, until her premature death at the age of just 53, in the loneliness of her Parisian apartment. The fascinating and captivating self-portrait of the greatest voice of the 20th century.

A nearly autobiographical book about the tumultuous life of the greatest voice of the 20th century. The timelessness of human relationship problems, the "weight" of success and talent, as well as the constant search for happiness, described by Callas herself and her environment, without any inclination towards sensationalism... I highly recommend it to opera lovers or not.
