The most painful consequence of the multifaceted Greek crisis is, undoubtedly, the triumphant entry into Parliament of an openly Nazi party. To the gloom that has covered the entire country is now added the black cloud of a political organization that invokes Hitler as a model and employs street violence as a method of national rejuvenation. How did we get here? And how did Greece, which prided itself on its tolerance and traditional hospitality, end up at the lowest rung of the most xenophobic European societies? How did the Pandora's box suddenly open, and the previously disreputable and marginal Greek far-right come to largely dictate the political agenda today, imposing its extreme choices on the party system at will? How did we forget the dictatorship? How is it possible for a Nazi party to be voted for in Distomo and Kalavryta? And how do we tolerate the mockery of the Holocaust in a country that lost the overwhelming majority of its Jewish citizens in concentration camps? The answer to these questions requires the study of the history and documents of the organization, from its founding in the distant 1980 to today, as it claims with confidence to leave its own black mark on political developments. In the texts, symbols, and, most importantly, the actions of Golden Dawn, the reasons that allowed the reappearance of Stormtroopers in a European country are traced, as well as the ways to stop the descent into barbarism.
