  I use them for writing with a Faber Castell Grip 1345 pencil.
  If someone wants something a little harder than HB, it's worth trying H. For me, it's the ideal hardness/blackness ratio. I don't like 2B and B because they smudge, while 2H, 3H, etc. are only for drawing, too hard.

  The Pentel Ain Stein is the best lead for mechanical pencils. While it is top-notch for drawing/sketching because it is quite sturdy (doesn't break very easily) and at the same time, it is soft and doesn't scratch the paper, so it performs very well for writing too! Having tried almost everything for 20 years, I would recommend these leads in combination with the Pentel Graphgear 500 (0.5mm) for drawing or even for writing, although for writing, especially for small notebooks that require slightly smaller clean letters! However, if you have a heavier hand when writing, it’s better to go for 0.7mm. Of all that I have tried, these leads with the pencil I mentioned are the best combination for drawing or writing. For technical drawing, I would recommend the Pentel Graphgear 500. For writing, the best pencil is the Pentel Kerry either in 0.7mm or 0.5mm. The Pentel Ain Stein are the best leads for freehand drawing as well as for writing. In technical drawing, I might prefer Faber Castell, because they are even sturdier and erase mistakes even more easily with the eraser. The hardness 2B with the Pentel Kerry offers the best writing quality you can find in a mechanical pencil. For school, the best is the Pentel Twist Erase III
