They are very effective in removing tough paint and cleaning/smoothing metal. The working speed is incredible, but the disc does not last forever (in essence, it is sandpaper, so don't expect to clean an entire ship with one disc). It requires a little attention and should not be applied with too much pressure as it will wear out quickly, but it has a good lifespan when applied correctly and gently.
