Many books have been written about the Asia Minor Campaign in its military and political aspects. Most of them typically contain disputes and confrontations not only within the general framework of Venizelos/Constantine but also at the level of military leaders and political officials. A notable exception is the present book. The author participated as a simple soldier and endured all the hardships up to the final capture, barely escaping death. Nowhere is there bitterness, complaint, grievance, or anger towards his fellow soldiers and superiors. He acknowledges the common struggle, the shared facing of adversities, and the final destruction. His narrative begins with his training and service in Afyonkarahisar during the winter and spring of 1921/22. It culminates on the morning of August 13, 1922, when the first Turkish shells fall on the city, leading to the retreat, destruction, and capture.
