Using the battery programmer Select from GARDENA, watering can be scheduled flexibly and according to the needs of each area. Up to three different and independent watering cycles can be created. The programmer operates on battery, connects directly to the tap, and is easily operated using only one switch, which rotates to select the data and is pressed to confirm. A readable LCD screen shows all settings at a glance. The weather protection unit can be removed. You can combine the Select battery programmer with a GARDENA moisture sensor.
Automatic irrigation with time-saving
Using a Gardena irrigation programmer, your garden can be watered reliably and conveniently - even if you are not at home. Enjoy more free time, a lush lawn, and also, beautiful and healthy plants. If the programmer starts in the early morning hours or in the evening, less water evaporates. This saves money and ensures targeted, optimized irrigation.
Easy Operation
The water programmer can be easily set up using the rotary switch for data selection and confirmation. A clear LC display shows all settings at a glance. The waterproof control unit can be detached to make adjustments. Thanks to an optional lock, accidental adjustment of the settings can be prevented.
Flexible watering with 3 programs
You can create 3 different watering programs. You can set the start time, duration, and days of watering. Adjust highly flexible programs according to your personal preferences. Plant experts use this feature for pre-watering to prepare the soil for the main watering. This improves water absorption and plant growth.
'Water Now' function
If watering needs to start immediately, it can be activated manually without removing the programmer from the tap or changing the settings.
‘Safe Stop’ technology
The water programmer always operates reliably due to the "Safe Stop" technology. If the battery energy levels are too low to fully control a watering program, then the program will not start. The battery level indicator on the screen also informs you when the battery needs to be replaced.
Water-saving function
When you connect the GARDENA soil moisture sensor, the automatic irrigation does not activate if the soil has sufficient moisture. This allows for better water supply and savings.

I bought this one after changing from a previous model of the same company. Fortunately, the programmer fit perfectly into the base of the previous model, and I didn't need to change the entire automatic watering system, which I kept the new base as a backup. It seems that Gardena maintains the dimensions of its products so that the new models can fit onto the old ones.
The display of battery percentage is also extremely functional, something that the previous models did not have.
I used it for the first time this summer of 2024 and for a month. When I returned everything was fine! We'll see in the future. What I like is that the screen comes off and I can adjust it elsewhere without disconnecting it from the faucet.
It is a very good and practical programmer, suitable for a balcony or a small garden. The screen helps a lot in use although not completely necessary. The different versions of the model that one may find (1891-36, 1891-20) have no difference, they just have a different code depending on the country where distribution is made. The one with code 1891-36 seems to be slightly cheaper than 1891-20, I suppose because it is an independent import. Gardena suffers from the diaphragm valve that needs to be changed every 2 to 3 years (Cost 3€), otherwise they are quite reliable while most spare parts can be found. I had previously 2 programmers 1030D (very good and reliable programmer, which is no longer available) but they gave up after 12 years, both at the same time! The gap between the screen and the body of the programmer that some complain about, no longer exists, they have fixed it. So if you receive a programmer that has this gap, it will likely be an outdated model.
The detachable screen has quite a large gap with the main body of the programmer to the point where you can see through (see the picture I uploaded), moisture and rain will have a party inside the device, will the system withstand the water inside where, for example, the battery is?
UPDATE: I had a meeting with Gardena on Athens Avenue to look into the issue, but it turns out this is how it comes from the factory, there is no fear of moisture because the board is insulated.
I don't know how long the battery will last because the screen stays on all the time, it never turns off! Impressive is the button for immediate watering activation, after that, the programmer continues normally with its schedule.
From there on, I was impressed with how easily and quickly you can set the days, hours, and watering time! (within 20 seconds) As soon as I picked it up in my hands, I immediately understood it without opening the manual (of course, you should read it).
P.S. I never leave a watering programmer exposed; I always put a handmade protective cap on it, even if it's made of foam, plastic parts degrade, and this applies to everything. High temperatures melt the board, distort the internal circuits, and the machine "goes crazy" unless the board is black or blue and not green (green is the worst possible quality). However, whatever this specific one has, we protect it even with a nylon bag.
UPDATE 2: It successfully completed the entire season without any issues
Easy to install, program, and use. Reliable. After 3 years of use on a balcony, I bought another 5 and installed them in a large garden and they work just as well.
It is what we call each to their own... Gardena is unbeatable when it comes to irrigation programmers.
I have three of them for cultivating 150 avocado trees, which the value of this specific cultivation exceeds 10,000 euros, so one can understand how reliable this company is.
Easy programming, endless possibilities through 3 different programs, and excellent construction quality. But be careful: we don't just set the programmer and never go back.
I go to the fields almost every day and check that everything is going as it should.
There are 3 things that, if we do, this particular programmer will never have a problem.
First, we need to frequently check (I would say once a week) the filter it has at the inlet to see if it has collected debris or dirt from the water so that we can clean it, and if possible, install a filter in the main water supply to minimize this phenomenon because if it gets clogged at the inlet, the programmer will open at the set time but the water will barely pass through or not at all, and this poses a great risk of causing damage to both the programmer and our cultivation!
Second, it must definitely be installed in a shaded area to avoid exposure to the sun!
Third, if the water comes from a natural flow, we need to know when it will have at least 0.5 bar pressure in the worst case. If the pressure is lower, the programmer will open but it will never close!
On the 2nd day of operation, the solenoid valve was not functioning. The previous Gardena programmer worked flawlessly for about 10 summers. I am very disappointed with this particular product. I expect a replacement or a refund. In case of replacement, I will update the review.
I have the older model which works continuously and has been exposed to weather conditions for over 7 years. I bought this model because I wanted another one, hoping it will last like its predecessor, it is easy to program.
Easy-to-use watering programmer with good build quality and many different watering programs. If it withstands time, as two previous ones of the same brand but simpler lasted over a year each until the body cracked and started losing water, then we will be talking about an excellent purchase.
A quite expensive but reliable device. Especially for places where visits are not frequent, the use of something reliable is necessary. I once used a cheap one, went to the vacation home after six weeks, and found everything dry. Since then, I mainly use these specific ones and have never had any problems.
I have an old one of the same brand for over 10 years without a screen, very reliable but difficult to navigate. This one is very easy and understandable to navigate. I believe it will be just as reliable as the old model.
I had bought one from a supermarket but it was completely unreliable, and I threw it in the trash. The Cardena works perfectly so far. The quality and ease of programming it, light years away from the supermarket one and definitely not comparable.
It is the second one I buy, not because the first one broke, but because I really liked the first one.
With the first one, I easily controlled a 100 sq.m. garden.
+ User-friendly and reliable mechanism with sturdy construction
+ Detachable screen, which means you don't need to bend over the faucet to make adjustments.
+ Very long battery life... I had it for a year and a half and even though it was still functioning properly, I changed it before going on vacation just to be sure.
+ Button for instant watering with preset duration. For example, if you set it to 3 minutes, every time you press it, it waters! Very convenient.
Note: It has 3 programs that you can set. That means you can schedule it to open for 1 minute up to 3 hours each time, depending on the day of the week.
A tip for those setting up automatic watering for the first time:
Don't install it and leave with peace of mind, it requires some trial and error for a few days to properly adjust the duration and the amount that the nozzles will spray!
It is as described, however, it has one significant drawback. When I program it to water from, for example, 23:30 to 00:30, it only accepts the first 29 minutes, that is until 23:59. In order to continue watering after 00:00, I would have to create a new program, and this is a problem because it allows for only a total of 3 programs throughout the day. In other words, you cannot water continuously with the same program from some time before 00:00 to some time after 00:00. Other than that, it is a commendable product with the quality of Gardena.
I expected to put it into operation and then evaluate the product. It is very well made, very easy to program, and I believe it will withstand the test of time. I freely recommend it.
Last Update (since I see that some people still view the review and find it useful):
After 3+ years of use, I want to inform you that it still works perfectly in both winter and summer with the same battery and without any issues.
Highly recommended...!!!
Initial review one week after purchase:
I recently bought it (so I don't have a criterion for its reliability) as a replacement for a programmer I had bought from Lidl. I had to change the programmer from Lidl because it had a constant leak from a collar that wouldn't stop no matter what I did (a relatively small leak, but I didn't want to leave it like that).
With the replacement and simply tightening it by hand, the leak was resolved, and the programming (which was an issue with the Lidl one) is a piece of cake that even a child can do...
Recommended...!!!
Update after 3+ months of use, the product is excellent and functions without any issues.
Update after over 1 year of use, the product is excellent and still functions without any issues.
I bought it for the ease of programming, I threw away the user manual because the setup is very easy and straightforward. I also bought it for its reliability and German build quality. I have another one from Lidl, which is good but so complicated that I had to keep the manual saved on my phone because I would forget how to set it up. With the Gardena, I can relax!
Wonderful. It's worth its money. Anything I had bought at a lower price broke within the first few months. I have been using this specific one for over a year and it's great.
I have it for a few days, it seems very reliable, definitely offers much more capabilities than the previous Gardena I had. I encountered a difficulty in entering the programming options, but eventually we found it.
Very easy programming and a wide variety of programming options, I'm a little afraid that the switches may not hold up but we'll see, for now, one season and everything is fine
I bought two of these for two separate balconies. One of them was defective, but thanks to Skroutz's return policy, it was quickly replaced. Both of them are working perfectly now.
Reliability Gardena. After spending quite a bit of money on various cheap irrigation timers that would work when they felt like it, you programmed them and they did their own thing, I ended up, like many others, with this one. You pay for it ONCE, it is easy to program and you can program exactly how much time you want and you don't have to worry that the battery will run out and the valve will stay open watering until you return from vacation...
It is one of the easiest to set up for watering. The main difference from other watering programmers, even from the same company, is that you can set up 3 different waterings for the same day, regardless of the time and duration, that's why it shows P1, P2, P3 on the screen. While the usual limitation is every 12 or 24 hours. Another thing I noticed is that when the battery dropped a bit in performance, after 7-8 months of use, it showed an indication of half the battery. I didn't replace it in order to see how long it will last and what behavior it will have. After a month, it still works fine, without any change in the indication. It's worth its money, and it also seems to have a quality construction. I will come back after some time for further information.
Good purchase at a good price. There was another one with the same name and code 1891-20. I don't understand what the difference is even though this one costs about ten euros cheaper. I bought it to replace an older Gardena that I had, which had a problem with not being able to close at a preset time. Obviously, the closing command had burned out. The good thing is that I attached the new screen to the old system and it was fully compatible with the old base, a multicontrol
