At first glance, the stories in `Men Without Women` are a collection of short tales about bullfighters, conmen, bribed boxers, junkies, soldiers in hospitals. However, what makes them stand out is not their themes, but the way they are written, which would prove decisive for all of Ernest Hemingway's subsequent work. Because here we hear that admirable dialogue organized by the author of the people of the street, the neighborhood, people living on the edge between law and madness, whose language resembles their very lives: without deep meanings, moral weight, and elaborate appearance. This different stance of Hemingway towards the language of narration also reflects his view on the role of the writer. He does not seem to be fascinated by the career of a novelist who recreates the world from his desk, but simply by the effort to use writing as clearly and sharply as possible to objectively describe, and with the simplest means of expression, events or to recreate with greater realism the sense of fear and violence.
